Have you ever wondered why we Christians do what we do for church every Sunday morning? Why do we “dress up” for church? Why does the pastor preach a sermon each week? Why do we have pews, steeples, and choirs? This ground-breaking book, now in affordable softcover, makes an unsettling proposal: most of what Christians do in present-day churches is rooted, not in the New Testament, but in pagan culture and rituals developed long after the death of the apostles. Coauthors Frank Viola and George Barna support their thesis with compelling historical evidence and extensive footnotes that document the origins of modern Christian church practices. In the process, the authors uncover the problems that emerge when the church functions more like a business organization than the living organism it was created to be. As you reconsider Christ's revolutionary plan for his church—to be the head of a fully functioning body in which all believers play an active role—you'll be challenged to decide whether you can ever do church the same way again.

Top Highlights

“The pulpit elevates the clergy to a position of prominence. True to its meaning, it puts the preacher at center ‘stage’—separating and placing him high above God’s people.” (source)

“The message of the steeple is one that contradicts the message of the New Testament. Christians do not have to reach into the heavens to find God. He is here! With the coming of Immanuel, God is with us (see Matthew 1:23). And with His resurrection, we have an indwelling Lord. The steeple defies these realities.” (source)

“Second, the sermon often stalemates spiritual growth. Because it is a one-way affair, it encourages passivity.” (source)

“‘ There is perhaps nothing worse than reaching the top of the l adder and discovering that you’re on the wrong wall.’” (source)

“Luther made preaching, rather than the Eucharist, the center of the gathering. 26” (source)

The content in this book is a game changer. I have found Viola and Barna's claims to be accurate and irrefutable. Its not for folks who are interested in defending the "status quo". On the other hand, if you have an inkling that there is something deeper to be experienced with fellow saints, then this book, along with its companion volume "ReImagining Church" is a good first step of discovery for the serious disciple.
