Join author and minister David Murray as he introduces you to Jesus through the lens of the Old Testament.

When you think of a son trudging uphill, carrying wood for his own sacrifice because his father has decided to give him up to death, what biblical event does this bring to mind? Is it Abraham and Isaac in Genesis 22, or is it Christ's passion in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John? The kinship between these two stories is deeper than mere coincidence, and the similarities don't end there. In fact, Murray argues that Christ isn't just present in the story of Abraham and Isaac--he's present on every page of the Old Testament.

In Jesus on Every Page, Dr. Murray guides the reader down his own Road to Emmaus, describing how the Scriptures were opened to him, revealing Jesus from Genesis 1 all the way through Revelation 22. Dr. Murray shares his ten simple ways to seek and find Christ in the Old Testament, diving deep into:

  • Christ's planet--discovering Jesus in the story of Creation
  • Christ's people--discovering Jesus in the characters of the Old Testament
  • Christ's promises--discovering Jesus in the covenants of the Old Testament

Recognizing Jesus in the full breadth of scripture is important for every Christian. In this step-by-step guide to discovering Jesus in the Old Testament, Dr. Murray provides a framework that will help you start practicing this wonderful way of enjoying Jesus throughout the Bible.

Whether you are preaching Jesus through Old Testament readings or just beginning to discover the reality of Christ in the Old Testament, Jesus on Every Page is an accessible guide to getting to know the Old Testament for what it truly is: full of Jesus.

Top Highlights

“Paul was not negative about the Old Testament as designed by God but about the Old Testament as perverted by man.” (source)

“But what did these Old Testament believers believe about Jesus? There were three main emphases to their faith: the Messiah will be a man, the Messiah will suffer, and the Messiah will conquer. All three truths appear in seed form in the first gospel promise in Genesis 3:15, where we are told that (1) the Messiah will be a man from the seed of the woman; (2) the Messiah will suffer as the Devil bruises His heel; and (3) the Messiah will conquer as He crushes the Devil’s head. These three gospel seeds are developed, unfolded, and expanded throughout the Old Testament.” (source)

“The Old Testament was not primarily a history of Israel but a revelation of God—it revealed Him to Israel through their history. The first question the Israelites asked when they read the Old Testament was, what is God like?” (source)

“A type is a real person, place, object, or event that God ordained to act as a predictive pattern or resemblance of Jesus’ person and work, or of opposition to both.” (source)

“Fourth, the Sinai covenant shows how we are to respond to grace. The great statements about God’s gracious redemption bringing Israel into a gracious relationship with Him19 are followed by a great, divine ‘therefore obey.’20 Having redeemed them and brought them into a relationship with Him, God gave them clear rules to help them show their gratitude to Him and keep their relationship healthy.” (source)

I finally started reading this one. Anyone who has studied the O.T. will find this all pretty basic info. The author makes some big assumptions in my opinion - for example "When Joseph forgave his brothers, he was picturing the future work of Jesus, which even then was working in Joseph, by the Spirit of Jesus." I do not believe Joseph was thinking of the coming savior when forgiving his brothers. I think he was forgiving his brothers. While I think it is good to encourage people to read the O.T. and see who God is, I find a number of the authors points a bit of a stretch. Such as - Ruth should be called the book of Boaz and we should be reading it to see how Jesus is like Boaz. I would rate the book a solid 'Meh', I could take it or leave it. There's a lot about his journey to discover Jesus in the O.T. but it's all pretty basic info after that.
